FAQ

Frequently asked questions.

Travel Planning
When should I start planning my trip? +
Ideally, start 3 to 6 months before departure. That gives time to research, book flights at better prices, secure visas if needed, and reserve accommodation. For popular destinations in peak season, plan 6 to 12 months ahead.
How much should I budget for a week-long trip? +
It varies by destination. Use our Smart Budget Calculator for a personalized estimate. As a rough guide: budget destinations (Southeast Asia, Central America) $500 to $800/week, mid-range (Eastern Europe, Mexico) $1,000 to $1,500/week, expensive (Western Europe, Japan, Australia) $2,000 to $3,000/week, including accommodation, food, activities and local transport.
Do I need travel insurance? +
It is not required, but it provides real peace of mind: medical emergencies, trip cancellations, lost luggage and more. Care abroad can be expensive. Make sure your policy covers your planned activities and any pre-existing conditions.
How do I check if I need a visa? +
Check the destination country’s embassy or consulate website based on your passport. Many countries offer visa-free entry (usually 30 to 90 days), others require a visa in advance, and some offer visa-on-arrival. Check at least 3 months before travel.
What is the best way to exchange currency? +
Use ATMs at local banks on arrival for the best rates. Avoid airport exchanges and tourist-area bureaus (high fees). Notify your bank before traveling, consider a card with no foreign transaction fees, and carry some local cash as backup.
Is it safe to travel solo? +
Yes. Millions travel solo safely every year. Check your destination on our Safety Scores page, avoid walking alone late at night, stay in well-reviewed accommodations, and keep someone updated on your itinerary. Trust your instincts.
Using PINYA
How does PINYA’s itinerary generator work? +
Go to Start Planning and enter your destination, dates, budget, travel style and interests. PINYA generates a personalized day-by-day itinerary with activities, estimated costs and local tips. Email it to yourself or save it to your profile.
How does the planning map work? +
On the Start Planning page, the PINYA Planning tab shows an interactive world map. Click any country to pin it, or search by name. Pinned countries are highlighted and added as your destination when you switch to Generate Itinerary. Pin multiple for multi-stop trips.
What is the onboarding preferences quiz? +
When you create an account, a 5-step quiz asks about budget level, pace, accommodation style, activity level and interests. Your answers personalize smart itineraries and can be updated anytime in your Profile under Travel Preferences.
How do I access cultural information and safety scores? +
Visit Destination Intel for cuisine, traditions, language tips and etiquette worldwide. Visit Safety Scores for crime ratings, health risks, advisories and practical tips. Both have search and regional filters.
Where can I browse curated itineraries? +
Go to the Itineraries tab. Browse curated trips for destinations like Paris, Tokyo and Bali, filter by continent, budget or duration, then save one to your profile or use it as a starting point.
Can I save my trip plans and preferences? +
Yes. Sign in and go to your Profile to save destinations, store itineraries, set preferences and track trip history. Your preferences make future itineraries more accurate to your style.
Budget Calculator vs Group Travel Expenses? +
The Smart Budget Calculator estimates total trip costs before you leave. Group Travel Expenses splits real expenses during a trip: log who paid what, split unevenly if needed, and get a clear settle-up summary.
What do the subscription tiers include? +
Free: 1 smart itinerary a month, up to 5-day trips, save up to 5, AI chat, PDF export, budget calculator, safety scores. Premium ($9.99/mo or $99.99/yr): 5 a month, up to 7-day trips, save 50, editable itineraries, email a concierge. Students $4.99/mo with .edu. Platinum ($19.99/mo or $199.99/yr): 10 a month, up to 10-day trips, unlimited saves, mid-trip suggestions, priority support; annual includes one Crown. The Crown ($79.99/trip): a planner verifies your itinerary, adds personal picks and booking links.
Is PINYA free to use? +
Yes. All planning tools are available with a free account, including destination intel, safety scores, budget calculator, group expense splitting, one smart itinerary a month, AI chat, and PDF/email delivery. Paid plans add higher limits, longer trips and priority support. PINYA is in beta, so some features and pricing are still evolving.
Can I share my itinerary with others? +
Yes. After generating or saving, you can share with the PINYA community so others can browse, save and build on it from Browse Itineraries. You can also browse trips shared by others and PINYA Picks, personally curated.
How does the budget calculator work? +
It estimates total trip cost from destination cost level, trip length, accommodation type and daily activity budget, breaking down lodging, food, activities and local transport so you can plan ahead.
How does group expense splitting work? +
Add your group on the Group Travel Expenses page, log expenses as they happen and assign who paid. Split evenly or unevenly. At the end, PINYA calculates exactly who owes whom with a clear settle-up summary.
How do my profile preferences personalize itineraries? +
When you set preferences (budget level, pace, accommodation style, interests, dining, motivations), PINYA factors them into every itinerary you generate, so each plan matches your style without re-entering anything.
